1. Objectifs du cours

The scope of this lecture is to present the main lines of the history of economic thinking (theories, schools and thoughts), for a better understanding of the economic mechanisms. The aim is to give students to develop a critical understanding of the influence of evolving economic thought. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of women economists over the time. Thus, the course is historical in content, diverse and international in perspective.

2. Description du cours

The course presents and analyses the contributions of the most relevant authors from the main schools of economic thought, pointing out the institutional, political and socioeconomical context. Students will explore the events and theories that had a major impact on economies around the world over the time (agricultural, industrial and technological revolutions).

3. Plan du cours

  • All the course materials, bibliography, assessment deadlines and information will be available on the online platform at the University of Nantes. This course is organized in twelve modules:
  • Module 0: Introduction, presentation, and organization of the course.
  • Module 1: The Prehistory of Economy: Classical Antiquity, Ancient and Medieval Thought.
  • Module 2: The Naissance of Economic Thought: Bullionism and Mercantilism, the role of Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, The Netherlands and Italy
  • Module 3: The Enlightenment: The case of the Physiocrats in France, the Italian and Scottish Enlightenment
  • Module 4: The Classical Economists: Adam Smith, David Ricardo
  • Module 5: Economic Science and the French Revolution: Thomas Malthus, John Stuart Mill among others
  • Module 6: The Legacy of Karl Marx and the rise of Socialism
  • Module 7: The Marginalist Revolution and the Neoclassical
  • Module 8: The Rise of the Neoclassicals,
  • Module 9: Keynesian Economics
  • Module 10: Post Keynesian Economics: Samuelson's approach 1950-1979
  • Module 11: The Return of English Thought: Monetarism and the New Classical Macroeconomics
  • Module 12: The Age of Disgregation: from one side of the Atlantic to the Other, and Female Economists
