1. Objectifs du cours
The main aim of the course is to prepare the students, as future managers, to face complex organizational situations involving problematic individual and collective behaviors. Three objectives are targeted in the course:
1. To know the variety of individual and collective behaviors in organizational settings, their forms, causes and potential consequences.
2. To develop the ability to diagnose complex organizational situations, especially in international and intercultural contexts.
3. To develop the students' management skills, their ability to make decisions and to act reflexively in complex situations.
2. Description du cours
The course is taught in English (exam included). The duration of the course is 36 h.
- The final exam is an individual 2 hour written exam based on 5 questions and one mini-case study.
- The oral presentation is a teamwork (3-4 students per group) : a 15 minute power point presentation + a 20 minute discussion with the classmates.
- Every student has to read the course material before each class in order to discuss the presentation made by one student group. The course material is provided on the students' intranet.
3. Plan du cours
- The course mixes lectures, videos and oral presentations. It is structured as follow :
- 1. Introduction : Images of organization : exploring various facets of organizations and using then to analyze problems and elaborate managerial solutions.
- 2. Overview of the main organization theories. Trends, evolutions and oppositions/tensions/complementarities between theories.
- 3. Decision making (+video : 13 days) as a key process for organization efficiency. Contrasting several models of decisions (from rational to irrational ; from functional to political).
- 4. Communication : between organizational silence and overload of information.
- 5. Power as a lever for management. The double nature of power and the dynamics of power/counterpower in the systemic approach of organizations.
- 6. Leadership (+ video Cain). Different types of leadership styles. The potential threats of strong leaders and toxic leaders.
- 7. Motivation as a complex challenge for managers. Facing the dilemma Under-motivation/Over-motivation.
- 8. Organizations and cultures. The interactions between corporate culture, professional cultures and national cultures. Exploring multicultural management issues.
- 9. Technologies : analyzing the influence of technologies (AI, telework...) on organizational behaviors and management practices.
- 10. Organizational performances : a stakeholders' perspective and the Icarus Paradox.
